Moldavite (Tektite) was formed nearly 15 million years ago by the asteroid impact that created the 14.5 mile diameter Nördlinger-Ries crater near Stuttgart, Germany and is found in the Moldau River Valley in the Czech Republic nearly 450 km (280 miles) away from the site of impact. Tektites are silicate-glass formations; scientists agree that these objects, whose name comes from the Greek tektos (“melted”), from a cosmic collision where the impact formed a huge crater and generated immense heat and pressure, instantly vaporising and melting the surrounding rocks.The molten rock was then ejected high into the atmosphere. As it traveled through the air, the material rapidly cooled and solidified into small, glassy droplets. These solidified droplets fell back to Earth, scattering across an area now spanning parts of the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria. This area is known as the Moldavite strewn field.
*Please note that genuine moldavites will never have a certificate of origin from the mine owners, as the Czech Republic do not allow issue of certification. The certificate of authenticity you will receive is from Didi, who has painstakingly sourced these tektites and examined each specimen carefully & extensively (see photographs) to identify the genuine article to the best of her knowledge.
